Is there a prayer God will not grant?
I came across a wonderful quote from C.S. Lewis which speaks to this point:
It would be rash to say that there is any prayer which God never grants. But the strongest candidate is the prayer we might express in the single word, encore. And how should the Infinite repeat Himself?*
"Encore!" is the prayer of, "Do it, again, God, just like before!"
~ Make me feel like I used to feel when faith was simple.
~ Make this Thanksgiving like the one we had before (fill in the blank here) happened.
~ Make worship, church feel like it used to when 'everyone went to church.'
You get the point.
When a young child is growing up, the request of parents to "Do it again!" is cute, if somewhat exhausting. When an adult offers the same prayer to God, it is just exhausting- and dangerous.
Demanding that the future mimic the past, makes it likely we will miss what new thing God is doing right now. God does not grant the prayer of "Encore!" because God is stingy with blessings, but because God is already working on “What’s next?”

What is the “next” blessing, healing, strength, or learning that is in front of us, today?
