Service Changes Things

Things change when we serve- that’s why we do it. We serve because we want to feed the hungry, house the homeless, comfort the afflicted, promote a cause, or help a neighbor. We measure the success of our service by the results: mouths fed, shots provided, lives changed, etc.

But there is another kind of result from our service. When we focus only on the changes we want to affect around us, we miss the changes service brings within us. It’s not as easy to measure, but the changes are real.

The results of change within us can sometimes be seen in what we gain: Patience, Compassion, Perseverance, and Generosity. Sometimes the changes are measured by what we lose. One who truly serves may see a loss in ego, pride, indifference, or the need for control.

All in all, it’s a pretty good bargain. We give ourselves away to change the world around us, and along the way, become the best version of ourselves. Service changes things, beginning with the one serving.
