Share about a time when someone noticed you in a crowd or saw a need you had that others overlooked. How did that make you feel?
Key Scripture
Matthew 9:36 - "Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were troubled and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd."
Discussion Questions
Seeing with Compassion (15 minutes)
From Observers to Participants (15 minutes)
Finding Your Niche (15 minutes)
Key Takeaways
✓ Jesus sees individuals, not just crowds - He notices the hurting, the lost, and the overlooked with deep compassion
✓ The harvest is plentiful, but workers are few - There are many people ready to hear God's word and experience His love, but we need more people willing to serve
✓ We're called to move from observers to participants - Faith isn't meant to be passive; we're called to be the hands, feet, heart, and voice of Christ
✓ Everyone has a unique calling - Not everyone is called to do everything, but everyone is called to do something
✓ Find where joy meets need - Your ministry niche is often found where your gifts, passions, and joy intersect with genuine needs

"The harvest is plentiful. The opportunities are everywhere, inside and outside these walls. The question is not whether there is work to do. The question is whether we are willing to join the work that God has set before us."

Discussion Questions
Seeing with Compassion (15 minutes)
- The sermon used the illustration of watching people in an airport. When you're in a crowded place, do you tend to see a "crowd" or individual people with stories? What makes the difference?
- What does it mean that Jesus saw people as "harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd"? Who in our community might fit that description today?
- Why do you think compassion, rather than just awareness, was Jesus's response? How does compassion lead to action?
From Observers to Participants (15 minutes)
- The pastor compared the disciples' journey to a teenager learning to drive—moving from passenger to driver. In your faith journey, when have you felt God asking you to "take the wheel" rather than just ride along?
- Jesus knew He couldn't do everything alone, so He empowered the disciples. What does this tell us about how God's work is meant to be done?
- What fears or hesitations might keep us as "observers" rather than "active participants" in ministry?
Finding Your Niche (15 minutes)
- The sermon posed the question: "What brings you joy and energy?" Take a moment to reflect and share your answer with the group.
- The pastor shared examples of different ways people serve (greeters, nursery workers, tech team, VBS volunteers, etc.). What needs or gaps have you noticed in our church or community?
- Not everyone is called to everything, but everyone is called to something. Do you currently know what your "something" is? If not, what steps could you take to discover it?

Practical Applications
This Week:
Personal Reflection:
- Spend 15-20 minutes in prayer asking God: "What is my 'something'? Where are You calling me to serve?"
- Make a list of your gifts, resources, and what brings you joy and energy
- Identify one need you've noticed either in the church or in your community
Group Challenge: Choose ONE of the following to complete before your next meeting:
- Serve Together - Sign up as a group to serve in one area of ministry (nursery, hospitality, community outreach, etc.)
- Notice the Overlooked - Intentionally look for someone this week who might feel invisible or overlooked. Take time to truly see them, speak with them, and show compassion
- Explore Ministry Opportunities - Research what volunteer opportunities exist in your church. Come back next week prepared to share what you learned and what interested you
- Reach Out - Think of someone you know who is "harassed and helpless" or going through a difficult time. Contact them this week with a call, card, or visit
Going Deeper:
- Read the full account of Jesus sending out the disciples in Matthew 10:1-42
- Study other "sending" passages: Luke 10:1-12, Mark 6:7-13
- Research spiritual gift assessments to help identify your unique gifts for ministry
Closing Discussion (10 minutes)
Share and Pray:
- What is one thing God spoke to you about during this discussion?
- What is one specific step you will take this week in response to this sermon?
- How can the group pray for you as you seek to discover or live out your calling?
Closing Prayer
Pray together for:
- Eyes to see people the way Jesus sees them
- Compassionate hearts that lead to action
- Courage to move from observation to participation
- Clarity about individual callings and ministry niches
- The needs in your community and those who are "like sheep without a shepherd"
For Next Week
Come prepared to share:
- One way you stepped out of your comfort zone to serve
- One person you noticed who might need God's love and compassion
- Any insights you gained about your unique calling or gifts
"The harvest is plentiful. The opportunities are everywhere, inside and outside these walls. The question is not whether there is work to do. The question is whether we are willing to join the work that God has set before us."
